Happy New Year!

With the new NBA season set to tip off with four games tonight, here are some of the things I’ll be watching for in tonight’s action.

Boston @ Cleveland, 7:30pm

I can’t wait to see LeBron again this season. Last year, coming off the Olympics, you could see that his focus was on improving defensively. Now, without a summer in the spotlight, I’m curious to see if he’s made any improvements to his already unreal game. Is this the year we finally see LeBron use his Karl Malone-like body to beast on people inside?

like a Quizno's Torpedo, he would still be able to beat the following athletes/teams:

-the entire Washington Wizards' starting lineup

-Charles Barkley

-Ricky Hatton

-Obama (with all due respect, Mr. President)

Did you miss me?  Sorry for the extended hiatus once again, but I was busy being cooped up in a metal box for days on end, plus I had to go ahead and lose all of my money to various undeserving casinos and their patrons, so I've had no time to reflect on the world of sports.  Many of you are probably expecting to read (or at least skim) some bitter, semi incoherent rambling post about Tom Brady's left knee and the dirty Chiefs and the especially classless fans of the NFL who actually had the gall to celebrate and commemorate a horrific injury to the league's best player, but I've gotta leave something for Simmons to do, so that will not be a part of my post today.  Instead, I'm going to hide from my problems inside the twisted world of the NBA, where my beloved Boston Celtics are still champions, and my mistresses, the Portland Trailblazers are looking better than ever and are brimming with talent and potential.

gh cover.

Defensively, the Cavs put the vice grips on a talented and potent offensive team in the Washington Wizards.  Cleveland's defense has always been solid, however they don't match up especially well with the Celtics and could suffer as a result.  Mirroring some of their offensive inconsistencies, the Cavs have personnel problems defensively since their mid season trade.  The Cavs have one problem in particular, and that is that wally Szczerbiak has to guard somebody when he's on the floor.  Wally World has never been fleet of foot or exceptionally committed to the defensive end, and it's very hard to imagine him chasing Ray Allen around the court or taking the physical punishment of having to guard Pierce.

e assist shy of a triple-double.  Meanwhile, LeBron James punctuated a 30-point blowout of the Washington Wizards coming up just one rebound shy of a triple-double himself.

If and most likely when the Rockets lose this series to the Jazz, it won’t be because of a lack of leadership or effort from T-Mac.  Think about it, the Rockets have a lot of young players with no postseason experience (not to mention a less talented roster than the Jazz in general) and are being forced to compete with the Jazz (with the same core nucleus of players) who are coming off a trip to the Conference Finals from last season.  The deck is stacked heavily against them, so to speak.

19 April 2008

Seeing as its the first day of the NBA Playoffs, I'm going to be doing a bit of live blogging and writing throughout the course of the day.  This way you'll be able to follow my flip-flopping analysis throughout the flow of the games.  As usual, however, I was not out of bed in time to catch the start of the first game, so although I know you're dying to hear my take on the first quarter of the Wizards-Cavs game, you'll just have to settle for the last three.  Without further ado, here goes.

First of all, today Gilbert Arenas totally backed up my assertion that the Cavs (despite LeBron James) are ripe for the picking in the Playoffs.  I was openly questioning my sanity then, and now I suppose that I should feel a bit vindicated, since I've been backed up by an superstar player.  The only problem is that Gilbert Arenas himself is certifiably nuts, and so I think I actually feel worse about my mental health, but better about my NBA IQ.  Now, on to business.

Of those seven games, only the Wednesday night game on April 9 will feature an opponent (the Washington Wizards) with a winning record (oh by the way, the Wiz are only 38-37 thus far, barely above .500).  The other opponents that the Celtics will face (Bobcats, Bucks x2, Atlanta, the Knicks, and New Jersey) have a combined record of 140-234 (and they say history majors can't add!).
