Washington Redskins

1. I’ve said before that the Patriots have the best pair of tight ends in the NFL. Let me just add that one of them is the best tight end in the NFL. Rob Gronkowski was a beast, breaking tackles en route to career high in receiving yards in a game (160) and set a new standard for touchdowns in a season by a tight end. He broke the record with his 14th TD grab then extended it when QB Tom Brady quickly tossed a pass over a blitz to Gronk. The Big Gronkowski did the rest, breaking a LB Ryan Kerrigan tackle then racing to the endzone and to the arms of a waiting Pats fan to celebrate.

What should had been a blowout of a clearly inferior team became an embarrassing one score win over the Indianapolis Colts as the defense gave up 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Two of those scores came at the expense of CB Devin McCourty. Colts RB Donald Brown swatted McCourty away with a stiff-arm en route to a 5-yard TD run. Less than eight minutes later, WR Pierre Garcon got behind McCourty and caught a 12-yard TD over McCourty’s head. McCourty lunged to no avail to stop the completion, beaten so badly that he couldn’t even look back to find the ball.

Albert Haynesworth.

I don’t want him.

I wasn’t a fan of the trade when I learned of it last Thursday because he slouched for two years in Washington after banking $41 million from the Redskins. The second year as Haynesworth warred with ‘Skins head coach Mike Shanahan really turned me off.

It’s about time we stop thinking of Bill Belichick as boring. We have to get out of our heads that the Patriots head coach is as bland as the gray hooded sweatshirt he’s famous for. Just because he’s monotonous and personality-free during press conferences doesn’t mean Belichick doesn’t have an edgy side.

Tom Brady – While the hit Brady took from Washington DT Albert Haynesworth looked bad, by how Brady was moving his arm on the sideline makes me believe his shoulder truly is just sore. I really would had liked to see how Tom bounced back after taking that hit, but can understand why the coaches pulled him from the game. Brady overall did play well. He even moved around in the pocket to buy time a couple of times.

I spent two weeks taking close looks at rookies and back-ups to see how much potential and depth the Patriots have. Tomorrow will be about the front line.

OK, so I’m exaggerating. Yeah I was concerned about what the starters did in the first two preseason games. I wanted to see how Tom Brady would play after his first major injury. I was curious about how the defense would play, taking certain interest in the pass rush. And the backfield has a standard to reach with Laurence Maroney back and Fred Taylor a new addition to the team.

Damn!

But all hope is not lost. The last option is the Washington Redskins. Prying the 13th pick won’t be easy, especially since the Patriots and ‘Skins are both interested in pass rushers. Luring Washington away from their pick down to 23 will be costly, but the Pats have what it takes. And since Washington has only five selections, a lure comprised of the 23rd, 89th (third round) and 124th (fourth round) might get Washington to bite.

In the world of journalism, it's the greatest compliment when an article you wrote inspires others to express their own opinion on the same subject.

Back in February, I wrote an article asking the question should teams draft tight ends in the first round. It was a relevant question because Oklahoma State's Brandon Pettigrew could be the only TE selected within the first 32 picks.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels turned down opportunities after last season, but he knew teams would keep knocking on his door. He was waiting for the right opening, and the chance to be the Denver Broncos' head coach might be exactly what he wants.

favored to win by more than a field goal.

The New York Giants are at -3.5 over the Washington Redskins.  The Baltimore Ravens are at -7 at the Cincinnati Bengals.  The Miami Dolphins are -7.5 to St. Louis, and the Indianapolis Colts are -5 at the Cleveland Browns.

l have to change to a 3-4 linebacker.

The good news, Robertson's scouting report compares him to Washington Redskins DE Jason Taylor. In reality, what are the chances Darrell becomes that good? He was a player I thought New England-type player the Patriots would be interested in on the second day of the draft. Robertson had the right measurables, but the question is can he make the adjustment.

The Pittsburgh Steelers versus the Washington Redskins brings to mind all kinds of historic players that I cannot remember.  Ok, so I can remember names like John Riggins or Franco Harris.  Maybe Deacon Jones or Jack Lambert ring a bell.  These names are not as prominent, however, as the kind of football they represented.

All of a sudden they bounce back and upset the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys.

The Rams haven't quite turned back the clock to 1999. While the offense had an explosive day as they rang up 34 points, the defense remains feeble, as they have allowed a 100-yard rusher in three of the last four games.

The Patriots are already on the Left Coast, waiting for a 4:15 kickoff against the San Francisco 49ers. A week later, they have a prime time game under the lights at San Diego. So with two games in a row across the country, the Patriots will change their routine and stay in California for a little over a week.

When the 1989 Dallas Cowboys went 1-15, that one win was against the hated Washington Redskins that finished 10-6. New England's 1990 team won in week two over Indianapolis, then a AFC East rival. It was the only win all season.

Will the Patriots play the season with a grudge? To be more precise, will Bill Belichick coach with a chip on his shoulder, intent to embarrass all teams that cross his path?

Think about the leads the Patriots had in the second half and how long he left the starters in the game. The pinnacle of rubbing it in was the total destruction of Washington, 52-7. The first unit scored their sixth touchdown to make the score 45-0 with 9:06 left in the fourth quarter. They converted a 4th-and-1 on Brady's last drive and a 4th-and-2 during a drive that ended in a 10-yard touchdown run by Matt Cassel.

I'm making a list.  The list contains the name of all the sixth round rookie quarterbacks who could have played at Colt Brennan's level from the Sunday night Hall of Fame game in their NFL debut.  It's not long.  Tom Brady comes to mind....after that, I don't know.  It's not just that Brennan threw two touchdowns and completed all of his passes.  It's that he did it in style.

Goodbye and good riddance to Manny Ramirez on his way out to Los Angeles. He's Joe Torre's problem now after the Boston Red Sox cut a three-team deal to send the team-killing douche bag left fielder to the Dodgers just before Thursday's trade deadline, a desperate move designed to purge Boston's decaying collective soul of a man who simply wanted no part of Red Sox Nation anymore.
