Philadelphia Eagles

OLB Clay Matthews. DE Larry English. CB Alphonso Smith. Just a few of the names projected as players the New England Patriots would draft with the 23rd overall pick. Instead the Pats traded out of the first round, stockpiled more picks, and used all four second round picks.

How often have you done something over and over until it becomes reflexive? Has that action ever become so repetitive that you lose track of what you’re doing while repeating this task?

In the world of journalism, it's the greatest compliment when an article you wrote inspires others to express their own opinion on the same subject.

Back in February, I wrote an article asking the question should teams draft tight ends in the first round. It was a relevant question because Oklahoma State's Brandon Pettigrew could be the only TE selected within the first 32 picks.

When I was a sophomore in high school playing on the JV basketball team, we went into our Christmas break undefeated and feeling pretty good about ourselves. Over the break we were scheduled to play one game against a team from the division below us. We practiced a few times, nothing too serious, and went into the game feeling good. But the week and a half layoff killed us and we lost by four, our only loss of the season.

What if Tom Brady had his knee torn up while on the road? Would the hostile crowd cheer?

I give Kansas City fans the benefit of the doubt. I don't think they would relish watching an opposing player writhing in pain from a blow to the knee. Nor would they celebrate their player for taking out an opponent for the year.

The special teams I'm not too worried about at this point, the Philadelphia Eagles have some great returners. As for the defense, well that's where I feel a little concerned. The linebackers are much better than what they have shown, and John Lynch will help out Rodney Harrison and the corner backs to make the secondary a little bit stronger.

It's time for the coaching staff to stop babying Matt Gutierrez. If we are to find out if Gutierrez is ready surpass Matt Cassel and be the back-up quarterback, he has to perform against first team defenses.

It's preseason game number three against the Philadelphia Eagles. And for the first time since the AFC Championship, the Patriots are at home. Yeah, it doesn't count against the record, but there's no place like home no matter the circumstances. Maybe familiar surroundings will be the difference for a handful of players raising their game. Or this could make the O-line find their comfort level. It could be the reason the defense imposes their will on Philly. No matter what happens, it's good to be home.

Goodbye and good riddance to Manny Ramirez on his way out to Los Angeles. He's Joe Torre's problem now after the Boston Red Sox cut a three-team deal to send the team-killing douche bag left fielder to the Dodgers just before Thursday's trade deadline, a desperate move designed to purge Boston's decaying collective soul of a man who simply wanted no part of Red Sox Nation anymore.

We're all familiar with an all points bulletin. This isn't as grand. This is a few points bulletin:

I want an independent investigation opened into Super Bowl XXXVII. Tampa Bay had an unfair advantage because head coach Jon Gruden coached the Raiders the year before and knew all of their plays. Anyone who's watched their Super Bowl highlight video hear jubilant defenders running to Gruden saying variations of "It was just like you told us." That's because he designed the offense Oakland ran and coached quarterback Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon on how to run the system. Gruden knew practically every strength, weakness and tendency of the Oakland offense and with the Bucs exploited the Raiders. Gruden didn't need video tape because it was all committed to memory. He's a cheater! Scandal!

NFL commissioner Roger Godell wasted little time handing out penalties after head coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots were caught with the poorly hidden camera. Besides the monentary fines, he docked the Pats their first round pick.

Bown, a thirty-year-old veteran coming off the most productive year of his career? Or how about the Philadelphia Eagles? Their secondary is like the backfield of the Denver Broncos. It seems a star can be born just by inserting anybody into their system. Lito Sheppard is younger than Sheldon Brown, so he would be the more attractive option for the Jets, but Philadelphia might be more willing to part ways with Sheldon Brown. Offer up a two for one trade. Try to get just one of those guys and you have plenty of linebackers to sweeten the pot. And then there’s the Tennessee Titans, who need offensive help and have a plethora of defensive talent to spare. Brad Smith has been an interesting player for the Jets but doesn’t seem to jive with their style of offense. However, with a mobile quarterback like Vince Young, perhaps an all-purpose player like Smith would be enticing to Jeff Fisher. Is there a trade involving Nick Harper that the Titans would consider?
