Yes, Bill Belichick is one of the best head coaches in the NFL. A genius defensively, he creates imaginative game plans that few coaches think of. But even an elite mind isn’t above borrowing ideas from other coaches.

The Patriots haven’t lost to the New York Jets in the playoffs. I did not know that. N.E. is 2-0 thanks to a 26-14 win back in 1985 and a 37-16 blasting in 2007. Naturally these results have no bearing on what happens on Sunday, but I find these facts interesting.

Are the Patriots the best team in the league?
Depends on who you ask. Some shout out yes from the highest mountaintop. Others say no, it’s the Atlanta Falcons. Power rankings might suggest. Bottom line is these opinions and polls are subjective.

If the game ended at halftime, the Patriots would had lost to Miami. And fans would blame one person for that: Cameron Wake.
The OLB was terrorizing Brady in the first half. He consistently beat his blocker, using speed, brute strength, some spin moves, and a non-stop motor. He got pressure a handful of times and even got a sack. The former two-time Canadian Football League Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008 was nearly unstoppable.

When CB Terrence Wheatley walked off the Gillette Stadium field last Thursday with a couple of trainers, it crossed my mind it would be for the last time as a Patriot for Wheatley. But his chance of sticking around went up with CB Leigh Bodden going down.

With less than five hours before free agency begins, let me get a few thoughts out of my mind:
Be sure to sign the Leigh Bodden thank-you card. He’s not coming back. He’s the second-best corner back available in free agency after Houston’s Dunta Robinson. It shouldn’t take him long to find an offer that he can’t pass up. His gamble to sign a one year deal with a promise from the Patriots that they wouldn’t franchise him will pay off. He erased his years with Detroit, including the 0-16 season, from everyone’s mind. Wish you luck at your next career stop, Leigh, as long as it’s not with an AFC East team.

In the world of journalism, it's the greatest compliment when an article you wrote inspires others to express their own opinion on the same subject.
Back in February, I wrote an article asking the question should teams draft tight ends in the first round. It was a relevant question because Oklahoma State's Brandon Pettigrew could be the only TE selected within the first 32 picks.

As the draft approaches, it's obvious that the Patriots need an outside linebacker that can effectively rush the quarterback and maybe another cornerback to add to the competition between Ellis Hobbs, Jonathan Wilhite, and Terrence Wheatley. Finding the kind of LB that would fit in New England will be tougher this year.

Brett Lorenzo Favre, the beloved gunslinger from Southern Mississippi who was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, made his first pass completion on his way to prominence as a Packer to himself and adorned a New York Jets uniform in his final season, announced his retirement yesterday…again.

This season is the chance Matt Cassel had been waiting eight years for. He was finally starting and after about a month of regaining his feel, Matt was playing great and showing everyone the player he's always been.

And Favre's new life will have an effect on the Patriots since they play at least twice this year. To accommodate Favre, the Jets released QB Chad Pennington and squash their quarterback controversy. It won't matter how well QB Kellen Clemens does. He will sit behind Favre and learn the game behind a productive and durable future Hall of Famer.

It's been unavoidable for the past two weeks. Clips of retired Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre going on and on about how he wants to come out of retirement but the Packers won't let him.
I've heard just about enough from Favre because I'm of the thought that if you say you're doing something, like retiring, then stick to it. If in the back of his mind he felt like I still wanna play, then don't hold a tearful press conference saying, "I know I can still play, but I'm tired. I'm just tired."

Actually, no.
There are three certainties in life. You know the first two - death and taxes. The third? Every year, Brett Favre will create a media circus around his return to football.
I'll freely admit that he's a great quarterback. But if I have to listen to one more Brett Favre apologist calling this guy a "gunslinger" or an "everyman", that Denny's Grand Slam breakfast I just ate may end up being refunded.
