The Draftees

Last time, we looked at a brief rundown of Celtics draft history. The good, the bad, and the severely questionable, each team has a checked history. That said, lets quickly investigate some picks made, then we’ll see about the Celtics’ choices.

Derrick Rose went to Chicago first. Now, they are overloaded at guard, leading many to think Kirk Hinrich is on the block.

Michael Beasley is a Heat. As pompous as I think this one is, he may be a good fit for a team needing muscle. But where does that leave Udonis Haslem?

OJ Mayo was traded... on draft day. Drafted by Minne-snota, he was sent to Memphis for Kevin Love. Both went with veterans, like Antoine Walker and Mike Miller. But neither draftee will probably have an impact next season.

Now, the C’s took JR Giddons from New Mexico in Round One, and Bill Walker from Kansas State and a Turk named Semih Erden.

Giddons was a transfer from Indiana, and he starred in New Mexico, averaging 16 points, eight rebounds, and over a steal and block a game his senior year. He also shot over 50 percent, and this being six-foot-five. He is know to be very athletic, as would fit the Doc Rivers style. But he shot only 60 percent from the line for his collegiate career. If he wants to get to the line, he MUST shoot better there.

Walker is also athletic. His stats point to him being a scorer, which is always handy to have around. He almost seems complimentary to a James Posey, who can shoot threes, but his offense pretty much hangs there. Walker is bigger than Tony Allen, giving him an upside, and he can be versital enough to possibly play tree spots.

Erden was drafted for one complex reason: he is an international big man with upside. His numbers are not staggering, but word is he plays hard around the hoop. That sounds like a certain semi-retired big man Doc got to play for him late this past season. PJ’s numbers have never been stellar, but he was always a hugely important role player in this same manner.

Erden is the most likely to fail and end up getting moved, or heading home, but in today’s day and age, none of these guys may be here in a year. But, in unique ways, these boys may fit some slots, in case the free agent market calls to the vets. The Summer League has much to tell us.
