Boston Red Sox-- Get a Much Needed Win and a Much Needed Player.

Friday being the trade deadline you knew the Sox were going to make some kind of move(because they always do) and they did. The Sox got the big bat they were looking for, by acquiring all-star slugger Victor Martinez from Cleveland for J. Masterson, and minor league pitcher N. Hagadone and B. Price. The 30 year old Martinez plays both catcher and 1st base and is a switch hitter and should be a huge help in the Sox lineup. Knowing Martinez is an every day player Boston sent A. LaRoche who was just traded here and had a hit in his 3 games, back to his former team the Braves for C. Kotchman who will be a solid backup to Youkilis and now Martinez. So overall this should help our offense and we didn't have to give up Clay so let's see how it plays out in the east.

 Last night after the deadline the Sox new centerpiece wouldn't arrive until Saturday so Smoltz and the Sox would have a back and forth battle with the Orioles before they get to meet their new team mate and this game was a good 1. Smoltz would pitch 6 innings giving up 5 earned with a 2 strikeouts.(not too good and even he said so after the game) But the Red Sox offense was not letting him get a loss.

The score was 5-4 Baltimore in the top of the 7th and Youkilis stepped to the plate with a man on and 2 out and he unloaded for a 2-run blast that overturned the 1 run deficit and putting Smoltz in place for the win. And not to be forgotten was Ellsbury's robbing L. Scott of a homer to keep the score where it was and  giving thelead to the bullpen--with Papelbon closing out the game for Smoltz, winning 6-5. It's Smoltz 2nd win in a Sox jersey and a much needed win for the Sox. The Yankees lost, so with our win we trimmed the deficit to 1 1/2 games and tonight our ace Beckett will be going against Baltimore's D. Hernandez at 7:05. So let's see how these additions help and hopefully we can go on a run and take back 1st place, so stay tuned!! Go Sox!!
